Layered Mediterranean Dip

There’s nothing better than a crowd-pleasing dip that’s packed with layers of flavor, color, and texture. This Layered Mediterranean Dip is a vibrant twist on the classic, loaded with creamy hummus, tangy labneh, smoky muhammara, and a fresh cucumber-tomato salad. Topped with briny olives, herbs, and feta, and served with crispy za’atar pita chips, it’s the ultimate Super Bowl dish.

The Layers

  • Little Sesame Smooth Classic Hummus (~1 cup)
  • Labneh (~1 cup)
  • Muhammara (~1 cup)
  • Cucumber & Tomato Salad
  • Fresh Herbs
  • Crumbled Feta
  • Kalamata Olives

How to Make It

Step 1: Make the Muhammara (Store-bought works too!)

Muhammara is a rich and smoky roasted red pepper and walnut dip, adding depth and a little spice to the dish.

Ingredients:

  • 2 red bell peppers
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp pomegranate molasses
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp Aleppo pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Char the bell peppers over an open flame or in a cast iron skillet over high heat until blackened on all sides.
  2. Place the peppers in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let them steam for 5 minutes. Then, peel off the skins and remove the seeds.
  3. Blend the roasted peppers with walnuts, garlic, breadcrumbs, pomegranate molasses, olive oil, cumin, Aleppo pepper, salt, and black pepper until smooth.

Step 2: Make the Cucumber & Tomato Salad

This refreshing salad adds crunch and acidity to balance the creamy layers.

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 Persian cucumbers, chopped
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped
  • ¼ cup red onion, diced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sumac
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Toss everything together in a bowl and adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 3: Make the Crispy Za’atar Pita Chips

Homemade pita chips bring the perfect crunch and are infused with za’atar for extra flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 Little Sesame pita
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 3 tbsp za’atar
  • Salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Split the pita breads along their seams, then cut into triangles.
  3. Toss with olive oil, za’atar, and salt.
  4. Spread on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and crisp.

Step 4: Assemble the Dip

Now, for the fun part—layering all the delicious components together!

  1. Start with hummus as the base in a shallow serving dish.
  2. Spread the labneh over the hummus, smoothing it out.
  3. Dollop the muhammara on top and gently spread.
  4. Scatter the cucumber and tomato salad evenly over the layers.
  5. Sprinkle fresh parsley and mint, adding a bright, herby touch.
  6. Crumble feta over the top, followed by a light drizzle of olive oil.
  7. Finish with sliced Kalamata olives for a salty, briny bite.

Serve immediately with the crispy za’atar pita chips and enjoy!
